Well, newer EL film is usually made with a polyesther film
and microencapsulated dyes that can be safely cut with
sissors, however, older EL materials included conductive
materials that, when cut, could splinter and short the
plates along the cut edges.  Also, the non-encapsulated
dyes used in older panels will dim along the edges where
it is exposed to normal atmospheric humidity.

If these factors will effect your particular panel is
anybodys guess, without asking the manufacture I don't
know how to tell the different models apart.
