Actually, AOL routes out onto UUNet. Backbones don't have proxies, they have
routers. Unless you are using the word "backbone" differently...maybe you
mean "Proprietary Network."

Wrong. Routers have nothing to do with IP allocation. They just juggle
packets, and in AOL's case, their routers just gather all your crap and push
it over to UUNet. Authentication servers control IP allocation, unless AOL
uses a proprietary authentication configuration.
