Nope, not really enough room in the 86 case for that.  If you look
at the open 86, there is a chip at the upper right of the main board,
the inverter is right on top of that, with the legs facing up.

I'm pretty sure its not a radiation problem, since the slowdown only 
occures when the inverter ground is linked to the calculator ground
(if I power the inverter from a seperate supply it runs just fine).

I was going to, but with only 10 ohms difference to play with it
didn't seem like it would help much.  Particularly since the more
voltage I drop across the resistor the more likely the inverter is
to shut down as the battery voltage drops.

Yep, I'll try some different filter configurations once I figure
out what the noise the inverter is causing looks like.
