Well, anything is possible.
You'd end up needing extra circuitry, though, and it would be easier and
cheaper to build an expander II or e(g) than to build circuitry which
would record to a tape.  It would also be significantly more reliable. 
I remember adjusting the volume on my tape recorder for my old zx-80 and
timex sinclair.  You had to have it just right!
