     If I'm not mistaken, that plastic stuff is polarized plastic.  If
you take the front and back pieces off and then position them 180 degrees
from each other, then they don't let much light through (The black part
of the LCD), if you turn them another 180 degrees they slowly turn clear
(The clear part of the LCD).  I think that the LCD somehow polarizes
itself when a current goes through the right contacts.  I think that
makes since, right?
     I have no idea what it is called, other than "polarized plastic". 
I'm sure that some plastic manufacturer, or science supply store carries
it.
