you'd probably be happier with some sort of preassembled programmer. They
come on their own cute little circuit board with a ZIF socket for the AVR
chip and a built-in voltage regulator to power the AVR during
programming.. Unfortunately, these tend to be in the $30+ range. There are
probably kits available that make you solder all the stuff onto the PCB
(which is usually included) but the cost would probably not be much lower
than for a preassembled programmer.
