Yes, that was my point. And the only exception is speed, because of
practical reasons. But every protocol that works over a wire, should work,
at least in slow motion, over an IR link. A decent IR link works with the
TI protocol, with I2C, and with any other protocols that are currently in
use. I'm not sure about these, but I believe the original Expander and the
Light Flasher use custom protocols. It is OK to have a fast, TI-protocol
specific link mode, but there should also be a line-state or similar mode
that works with everything else.
