allow you to determine the circumfrence of a circle approximately
the diameter of the solar system to within about half the diameter of

Perhaps, depends on how you define necessary and for what application
the number is to be used.  To people studing number theroy it can be
important when attempting to determin if Pi is actually infinite and non-
repeating.  To me it is simply a curiosity, about 6 years ago I could recite
about 40 digits of it from memory, made a good password for the computer
lap at school.
