The answer is try.. try... try..

For me the answer was don't plug it in until I am in link-receive mode,
quickly try to send something, then it usually doesn't work but from that
moment on I can just keep it plugged in and use my calc. Maybe it'll work
for you too.
Just to be sure, go into a assembly program and try the same. It shouldn't
lock up then.
