That's probably enough to dim the screen easily. Try running it off a separate
power supply.

My old amplified speaker cartridge did the same. It's because of the power draw.

That's something you can't realy do too much to help. SOme people have used
external power supplies before. I did one design that allows you to run the
LED backlight from either and external power source, or the internal one

I'd like to know how to use a transistor to turn it off when the calc is
turned off!
