Yes, MAXIM (www.maxim-ic.com I think) is excelent with samples. You can 
order 8 at a time, but except for evaluation kits and about 10 parts, 
you can get I think just about anything they make, including their 
voltage regulators. I haven't been there for a while, but I would 
request the MAXIM ENGINEERING JOURNAL. It contains two cards in each 
issue for free samples (8 per card). Always check the future issues of 
maxim enjineering journal to get more cards. (I'm not sure how long you 
need to wait to order MAXIM samples again online because the server only 
accepts one per name for a certain amount of time)
