Two problems with that theory:
1)By cutting the voltage down to 4.5V you are using half the power
  in the calc and wasting the other half in warming up the resistors
  (and your calc,BTW)
2)If you crack open a 9V, you will see 6 little dry cells, which
  look a lot like the AAA's the calc uses, only smaller (i.e. low
  capacity)


The real way to save on battery cost is to use the coupon that came
with your calc and go out and buy a Renewal station so you can
recharge the batteries that came with (assuming you bought the
calc recently) I combined the $4 coupon with a $10 rebate offer
and got mine for $4 plus the tax on the whole thing.
