x[targetcolumn][targetrow]

Nothing to it, eh?  A data file is really just a bunch of 
lists.  The first number selects the list (by column 
number) and the second number acts like the usual index 
placed after a list.  The system simplifies 
x[targetcolumn] into a list variable, then indexes it with 
[targetrow].
