Of course there's a way to make it faster.  If I had just a little bit more
information I might actually be able to tell you what that way is.  Actually,
you need to give me a lot more info.  Such as what it's doing while it's
taking so long (i.e. deriving the periodic table all by itself) and what data
it has as well as how you store this data.  More than likely you use a large
loop, and loops are almost always condensable.
