In a word: WRONG!
Group projects are _especially_ smart when it comes to programming. I
don't know what went wrong in your examples there but it must have been
bad coordination.
Group programming is a brilliant invention, you just have to know how to
manage it.
I know because I've done it on more than one occasion.
