Heuristics is a way to solve a problem using a set of rules to eliminate
unecessary work. Basically a type of AI.

i.e.

You are doing a heuristic search for orange dogs with green eyes

You can eliminate every animal that is not a dog, even if it is orange and has
green eyes.

Now eliminate all dogs that are not orange. 

Now you've narrowed your choice down from god knows how many to much. much
less.

In fact the part where you said "a way that i speeded it up is i made it skip
the logic needed for previous 
or future moves: for example,.." This is heuristics. The program knows that on
the first move there can be NO winner, and there is no need to block two in a
row.
