If by `third root' you mean cubed root, or 9 to the power of 1/3, then it
isn't 3 I'm afraid; 3 is the square root of 9, i.e. 3 x 3 = 9

Try 9^(1/3) which should give 3^2/3 in auto or exact mode, or 2.08008 in
approximate mode.  You can check this by doing 2.08008 x 2.08008 x 2.08008,
which should give you something close to 9 (8.99995 if rounded as above).

It's all in the book, though...
