Yes, it worked for you, because you have necessary knowledge.

However, for an average user, buying home made and virtually
unsupported hardware and software is nothing more than asking
for troubles. The "official" link works well and is inexpensive
enough.

Some people like playing with their devices and build own
peripherals, cables, create support software etc. And that's
ok. Others want simply to use their devices with a minimum
possible hassle. That's why they should buy the official link.
