I don't know how the cold will effect the 83.  I think that your results
are more likely because of the effects of the cold on the battery than
on the other electronics.

Something to watchout for is the condensation that will collect on a
cold calculator - it could ruin that calc if you don't watch out.

Something to try would be to goto Radio Shack and get a can of component
cooler - it is made to troubleshoot faulty electronics that work fine
when warmed up.  It freezes to -63 F and leaves no residue.
