I'm in the same position as you... and I have a TI-89 and a TI-83 (my
teacher doesn't really know about the TI-89 :P ). Sure, it will give you
several advantages over the TI-83, but it will also give you some
disadvantages. The teacher probably doesn't know how to use the TI-89, so
you'll have to figgure some things out on your own. Some things are more
complex, and even not possible on the TI-89. In my precalc class (sounds
like your "Functions, stats, and trig class") I try to use my TI-89
whenever possible, but for most things we learn in class I end up using my
TI-83 for. But I dont think your teacher should ban it, for it is allowed
on the SATs. Just keep in mind that you might be giving yourself more work
by using a TI-89.
