    This is my experience with this...problem:
    I didn't even know that I had typed in a password the first time time I
did it. So I too had to take out the batteries.
    It has happened several times...and one time I took out the batteries
and put them back in and it *didn't* erase my memory and I *wasn't* back at
the password screen...somehow the calculator took me back to the homescreen
with everything still there!
    Anyway, the point is that weird things can happen when this password
feature is enabled and you take out your batteries...
    My suggestion? Try new batteries.
