$4 serial link cable

I've given up!

I've tried to get this $4 serial link cable to work, but I've been
unsuccessful! I get the 5.1V as stated in the docs when I short red and
the copper, but I get 6 volts when I short red and white! Shouldn't red
to any other wire be 5.1V (I'm using 5.1V Zener diodes.) I followed the
"foolproof" directions. But I *have* noticed that the wiring diagram is
different between the "foolproof" set and the schematic. The positions
for the copper and white wires are different on each one. Which is
correct? Can anyone give me help on this one? I really want to save
the $45 but I'm 'fraid I'll fry my calculator!

As an alternative, has anyone got a working cable that they want to sell
me? I'll pay for one completely made plus shipping (we'll negotiate
the cost, I suppose.) Or, of course, does anyone have a TI-Graph Link
for cheap?? Thanks.
