A89: Annoying Newbie Questions

This is probably a question that comes up a lot, but I couldn't find in
in any FAQ.  Is there a certain program which is well-tested, cleanly
written, not too large, not dependent on a particular shell, and in
other ways suitable for studying by one learning assembly on the 68k as
ZTetris is for the Z80?

Also, I have not yet actually bought a TI-89.  I have heard some things
about HW1 and HW2.  Is there a way to easily tell the difference, and if
so, is one better than the other?

Finally, how are compatibility issues between the different versions of
OS handled?
