You can connect 2 computers together at a faster speed than that.  Or do you
mean just over a phone line?  In any case, connecting to the internet should
be faster than connecting to another modem, because it only goes through 2
digital<->analog conversions instead of 4.

The whole reason for stating a '53K' limit is because the older phone lines
have trouble even going this fast.  As previously mentioned, if you have
newer lines, it goes faster, regardless of this 'FCC 53K' limitation.
