A89: programming help

ok, no one else seems to know, so im just gonna ask the list.  what im trying 
to do is make a program.  and what i want is a main program, and a program 
that has just the background picture (ala sf2ti) but i want the main program 
to set everything up, then have the main program, call the graphics 
background program, and choose a random background, then put the background 
up on the screen.  then go back to the main program, and write some text over 
top of the background.  and i have no idea where to start.  so someone please 
help.
