Re: A89: AP Calculus

Your teacher has the right to tell you to use or not use specific material while
in class. Out of class, you can use any tools you wish. However, if you use an
89 out of class, but have to take a test with the 85, you'll be at a significant
disadvantage, compared to the other students. What you practice with ends up
being what you learn. If a tool you use out of class helps you remember things,
then all the better.

But the answer to your question (Do you ... think that a teacher ... [has the
right to tell me I have to use a specific calculator, even though the] ... AP
college board approved ... [many other types (one of which I would rather use)]

Is a resounding YES. The teacher has every right to tell you what tools to
use. If you have a problem with their teaching style and rules, you'll need to
take it up with them, and, failing that, with thier superiors. The simple fact
is is that she's not trying to shortchange you. Her style and method of
teaching may not fit well with the capabilites of the calc you prefer, and would
slow you both down. Find another teacher who will let you use the tools you
desire. If you are stuck, you're stuck. Take the class at a local college,
assuming they (or the particular teacher) will let you use that calc. It costs
more, but then you get what you want, right? Plus you get college credit, and
can take other classes at your regular school (I'm guessing high school) which
may be more interesting.

Lastly, you never did tell us what class it was. If it was AP Calc, I can
understand you wanting to use the 89. But if the class were any lower than
that, chances are the calc will do too much for you, you will learn less, and
the whole class would have been a waste of time for you and your teacher.
