No, even if you just plug in a link that isn't connected to anything else the
calc still turns on.  Audio jacks have a built in switch that closes when
something is plugged into them -- thats why a computer's speekers go off when you
plug in headphones.  I don't really see the advantage of this feature on the 89
though.  I guess it saves you a keystroke.
