write to bits 0 and 1 of the data port (0x278 or whatever) and read from
bits 4 & 5 of the status port (data port + 1)  you do have to write (or
find) code to send/recieve individual bits and such.

somewhere i found a "readlink.c" file, look for the package to test the
link cable, might be for the 85
