The Mac will open just about any file. If the file isn't too big, use
simpletext. Otherwise, BBedit is a good program. It seems to be able to examine
anything--note I didn't say it would produce everything, but it will allow you
to open anything as if it were a text (or ascii) file.

The .DOC file extension refers to a Microsoft Word file. the Macs ignore
extensions, it keeps reference to the type of file in a fork.. If you have Word
on the Mac it will open a Mac or IBM-PC type file.
