I think that the rom routines you are talking about have 16-bit headers (2 byte).  But I might be wrong.  Dan Eble's page has some nice string functions that mimic some of the ones found in standard C.

For the ROM call that compares 2 zero-terminated strings with a 2 byte header, what is the byte header other than length?
