the 85 uses normal ram like he said but its kept powered by the lithium battery so you don't have to tranmit the string again everytime or anything like that. have you looked at what mel did with the expander serial flash (esf) or what mel/bryan/grant/whoever is doing with the expander II? I bet they have a lot of your work already done for you as far as how to start this project.
