i believe it is putting it into bytes. so it takes bits and divides by 8 and since we dont want a decimal round up

masking is like punching holes in a sprite.  it tells the routine whether or not to plot the pixel.  it is useful when you want part of the background to show through. 
you create a seperate sprite telling it which ones you want to plot
