they sure can read/write data i have 2 very old TRS-80 color computers from Tandy and they use cassettes. very cheezy and very primative but they work. also i dont know that this tape thing is such a good idea anyway. i mean who wants to lug a tape recorder around with them anyway?

Yes you can read and write data to an audio tape if you do it right. I
had an old computer (Amstrad c6128) which utilized audio tapes as a form
of software. All that was needed was to plug a casset recorder into it
and you were of and running. Not sure at how much data it can hold
though.
