Is that the way strings are checksummed too? A hexedit program with the 
ability to update checksums would be very valuable.

before you send the backup back to your ti, you need to update the
checksum.  Add up all the bytes mod 10000, or use fix.com (avail in
"Hacking the 85" as a UUEd program) to do it for you.
