That's blatantly false.  You don't need a license to modify your own
software.  You didn't sign a contract when you purchased the calculator.
They have absolutely no legal basis to enforce arbitrary terms or conditions
after the sale has been completed.

Modifying your own software does not contribute to copyright infringement.
The only thing that will get you into trouble is distributing copyrighted
material.  Patches are completely legel.

Of course, this ignores the DMCA, but this would be a good example of the
DMCA being used to hinder research and consumer rights.
