I don't know about many people, but i would try writing some sprite routines if it would result in a grey scale system. the only problem is that mine would be aligned sprites only :P but still, If you found a plausable, and good looking way to do it, I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find people to re-write/write new routines for it.
