I think that you should leave it as is.
For instance if you needed to quickly get back to it you would still have to
run the program and click current, rather than selecting open, then locating
the file, which would not take long.  Btw, I can send you the source of a
notepad program that i worked on a year and a half ago for the 83.  You
might get something beneficial out of it.
