Why don't either of the shells use key combinations to start your shells?  It would be much less intrusive on other programs (no variables would be used), and the interrupt vector table would be built in to your shell, making it very easy to implement piggy-backed interrupts.  You could even make the key combo customizable (see Debug for the 85).  I'd be happy to give my code for this cause :)
