Program of the Year Voting Opens
Posted by Michael on 2 December 2003, 10:18 GMT

Sample POTY WinnerWe all know how many people missed the Program of the Month awards that were previously held. Well now there's something even more prestigious: the 2003 Program of the Year award. Throughout the month of December, featured programs from throughout the year will be classified by calculator in weekly surveys. Simply vote for your favorite program! Every Monday a new survey will be posted with a different set of programs. The results will be hidden until all the winners are determined.

The ticalc.org 2003 Programs of the Year will be announced early January once all the results have been tabulated. As before with the POTM winning programs, a specialized screenshot will be provided for the winners. Good luck to all contestants!

Update (Morgan): This is only relevant because there are two Mario pictures on this article, but for anyone that has ever played the original Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES and thought you were good, you need to see this!

Update (Joey): The poll for the 68k calculators has been posted.

It is temporarily on hold because Joey ran out of time, I believe.

Studying for five AP tests is stressful. Worry not, though... it will return.

Yeah, I thought that AP tests were generally given in the spring.

Huge movie file... 17.5MB (downloaded in one minute!) WOW, that mario movie brings back SOOOOOO many memories!!!! I always remember my old claim "I can beat Super Mario Brothers 3 in 10 minutes" I never actually timed myself, but I assume it was a little bit more, after looking at this movie here (11 minutes). This is incredible... LOL! I wonder how long it took this guy to get that good at it. I remember beating a lot of levels just as fast, because I'd play this ALL THE TIME when I was younger. *still in awe* That's great. I'm saving this.
I wonder how many tries it took him to do this. He'd probably have to keep saving his spot along the way (with an emulator) to do that. And I never knew you could kill Bowser like that. That's really clever. *faints*

But I did notice one thing... on the first level... mario kind of hovers in the air and then goes back up. Mario can't double jump or fly or anything while he's small like that. I wonder what's up with that...

As I pondered this further at school, I reasoned that he was emulating and making a screenshot and then after falling, he died, so he stopped the filming of the falling, started a new game, and continued the filming at that exact spot... but the problem was, he was falling before, and in the new position, he was jumping. That's probably it, though that's kinda cheap. LOL *watches yet another time, but more closely*

But there's no reason for that in the first place... from where he did it... oh, I dunno. >:( Perhaps the version is slightly different... after all, it's in Japanese... LOL

Just now I tried downloading it but it said the service was temporarily unavailable due to "scheduled downtime or *capacity problems*" (my emphasis). With a 17.5 MB file having a direct link from a popular site like ticalc.org, maybe that's not too surprising. :-)

It's great that you guys resurrected POTM...er...POTY.
Hmm, could have a better acronym (hint: said it out loud as if it is a word), but nevertheless an awesome idea. This proves once more that ticalc.org is back in action.

I may not have the 86 YET, but it looks like Super Mario 1.2 and 2.0 for the 83. I always wanted to see it ported to the 89.

Hmmm... That big *SAMPLE* text wasn't on the image before... I bet they got worried that people were going to rip it off and make POTY screenshots for their own games. That would be funny...

NEWSFLASH: Randum Numer Genre...Genar...er...Maker POTY!!!

I was kind of rushed to post the article so I had a real basic screenshot put up. I then added the Mario content and had a little thing in the upper left corner that said "sample" but you could barely see it. Then I added that big "SAMPLE" that you now see.

And finally I added the "2003" at the bottom because the winners screenshtos will have the year on them so we can tell which year they won! I will also be updating the awards page when the time comes to post the winners.
