Jimmy Mårdell bags Google CodeJam
Posted by Magnus on 15 November 2003, 21:32 GMT

Jimmy Mårdell, author of many great programs and games in our archives (anybody heard of ZTetris? Sqrxz?) has just won the Google CodeJam. See an article about it from The Mercury News.

A great big congratulations to Jimmy!

Well, that is quite interestin....

I hope that one day, i will be a goodenough coder to win that channenge.

However, moreimportantly, why can ti not have coders working for them, to create better OS's. Fo rthat matter, why not 24 other companies, each hire the other 24 finalists, to rewrite their programs better and more efficient?

Its REALLY expensive. How much do you think it would cost to host a massive worldwide online tourney and then fly some 200 people to the googleplex halfway around the world for some and then give out money prizes for the winner just to find a good coder and hope he'd work for them? And if they had a tourney to rewrite their code, whos going to grade it? That would be one massive thing if a company that could afford it asked the world to rewrite their 200mb of code, how many backdoors would you think we would leave?

Perhaps you misunderstood my question. I was asking why these people don't go and make an offer to the fianlists. Not that they should have coding competitions. You are right, that would be too expensive, just to get good coders.

I would think that it would be easier if the finalists just put it on their resume and then tried to apply for the job, that way neither the company nor, hopefully, the finalists get turned down.
