Author Statistics with TIreport
Posted by Michael on 21 August 2003, 03:58 GMT

Joris Gillis has released a nifty program called TIreport. This program will generate personalized statistics for your ticalc.org files. You can view a private ranking for each file with a color indicator, sort by several different fields, et cetera. Note that this program downloads a copy of the information page for each file you own, so please don't generate the statistics excessively (It does save the outputted report for future viewing).

Personally, I don't think I have a need for it. But hey, it's something new. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime...

I tried one of the earlier versions, but couldn't get it to work. I don't think I'll download it again.

Great! A new article!

Now...what are the benefits to using this program over periodically checking your author page?

It shows you a lot more information than your author page, including download rank for each file, etc.

Okay, that's cool... but is the setup hard? I don't have PERL... (after so much of people telling me to get it LOL)
Anyway... um... since it's PERL.. can it run on a server? or is it just a harddrive thing?

btw, I have just gone over 30 hours with no sleep... if I'm making stupid statements or if I'm not making sense... please understand :) thanks

What do you mean a "hard drive thing" everything has a computer, servers and desktops and laptops. But yes it does durring the install it says somethign about IIS i dont know exactley i just looked over it and if you dont know what IIS is and you have a server SHUT IT DOWN you dont need to have it.

I MEAN, does it run on your hard drive or off of a server? A lot of PERL scripts are run in CGI-BINs on the internet, so I was wondering if they were run off a site or directly off your HD, and if they were run off the hard drive, then what would you need to install to get it to run! Sheesh! I was up for 36 (turned out to be ~37) hours straight. Give me a break!

It is a highly graphical report. Isn't that nicer than clicking every file you own and looking at plain numbers?

That's pretty 1337 - but is it dynamic, i.e. if you call reportpage.html will it change without running the program again?

The statistics will not update without running the program. But it generates a shortcut, so you don't have to look for your author page URL every time.
But you can sort the table without running it again

You should make it dynamic it yould be cooler and probably not that hard

The only way it could become dynamic is that Ticalc.org would make an XML database that everyone can access.
There would be no need for perl and it would be much faster.

That's an awesome idea - TICalc.org really should do that, so people can have dynamic ticalc.org author stats on their own websites.

I'm glad someone shares my opinion.
I once asked Magnus if whole Ticalc.org could be based on XML. He said he's planning to move some parts in that direction but certainly not all. :(

I prefer perl and MySQL. PHP has too many security holes for my taste.

Why would ticalc.org go to XML? Not a single page on ticalc.org is standards-compliant, and XML isn't flexible like HTML.

Why do you think that?
