Calcwars Released
Posted by Michael on 25 May 2003, 15:17 GMT

Andy Hou has released a strategy game for the 92 Plus/Voyage 200, called Calcwars. Players build units, move them, attack the opponent's units, capture buildings, etc. A future version will have a calculator AI player available.

Update: The 89 version can now be downloaded.

Is it just me, or does this look like a rip off of Advance Wars?

It's not just you. But don't call it a 'rip', call it a 'port'. It just sounds better.
And when is it coming out for that new color graphing calculator with the IR port and stuff that happened to be leaked around April 1st?

I think he knows. Maybe that's why he said,

Thats pretty awesome, but I have advance wars for my gameboy advance already, but it might be fun if I have a craving for some gaming (woah, it rhymes!) at school.

on the other hand, this could be illegal, after all, its a copy of a very popular game on a portable system...

By same things, do you mean exactly the same graphics, for example?

OMG, it's not illegal. If they completely copied the code, it would be illegal. They have tetris, and a bunch of other nintendo/gb/etc. games on this site...

But then again, it doesn't really matter... isn't downloading songs or movies off Kazaa illegal? Everybody (except me) still does it...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its illegal only if you use the same engine or the same name or any name that's copyrighted.

Well if you take any portion of the code or a copyrighted name. Taking the coded means you cannot even look at it because there is no proof that you did not memorize sections (electro-chemical and biological version of copy and paste) and integrate them into you program/games.

Geez, all these calc turn-based strategy games have a grid on the playing field. I hate the grid! I made a Tiberian Sun game in BASIC (which I never finished but its almost done) and didn't use a grid, and it looked fine. No grid makes it look more like land instead of a screen. Advance wars didn't have a grid...did it? What is it with calcs and grids?

Then one must ask...does it really matter?

When you say grid, do you mean all those lines cutting the screen into squares? Or do you mean spaces to which you can move (like the spaces in chess)? The original Advance Wars IS divided into spaces. However, the strategy game CTC2 for the ti-89 isn't divided up (or at least appears not to be, which is good enough for me).

Too bad it isn't for 89, and I really don't like using VTI, it's too awkward.

I think it wasn't ported to the TI-89 b/c the screen is too small.
