New 3D Project
Posted by Joey on 9 May 2003, 02:32 GMT

Thibaut Chevalier is working on a new 3D project for the 89, 92+, and V200. It can reach 20 FPS, and will render scenes from a tilemap. No release date is set, but he plans to release a clone of the old 3D car racing PC game "Stunts" once the engine is perfected. Find out more at his website.

this looks really cool, I hope it's done before the beginning of next school year.

*sounding hopeful* I hope he ports it to z80 :)

I know it won't happen, though.

I seriously doubt it, since the languages are so different... but you never know ;-)

Be sure I won't :(
It is too tiring to make in asm what C does... All those points and polygons need a lot of organization and C is perfect for that, but not asm.

Can you get TIGCC (or whatever it is called) to output a direct *.asm file, that you (or someone else with a knowledge of both 68k and z80) could then 'port' to z80?

This is possible, but i won't do it. But i don't know if what you propose is better than re-writing the engine directly in z80 asm...

you would probably end up making an awful program if you did this. You have larger registers in m68k, and more of them, to have a compiler create code optimized for a 68k and then try to convert it by hand would be ridiculous, you'd be better off just starting from scratch, or from the c code

I really cannot give any release date... The game is not begun at all ! I have lots of things to do for the car, the trajectories, jumps...

Could you write a simple version (extensible, of course) and release it just to show that you're making progress? (for example, have simple, less-polished graphics and physics) Then you can add various things as it matures and still satisfy users by giving them something to play with. If they don't like it much, then that's their problem; it's still better than having nothing at all.

For all we know he could already have a game completed, but is just touching up a few things. Anywho, I think that whatever game comes from this will be really cool to play. (And make all of the z80 users druel (or is it drool?) a little...)

That's probably what I will do. I have to program polygon clipping, then i will begin physics, and when it is functionnal i will release a demo with one track (no jumps first I think...).

Suggestion for New 3D Project
Ti-89_Coder Account Info

Nice! When I saw the screenshot of this engine, I immediately thought: 3D RTS! A game like Myth2 (the best strategy game ever) would probably be possible: Use sprites for units and 3d polygons for buildings, walls, etc. Unfortunately, full 3d terrain (hills, valleys, etc.) would probably be too processor intensive, so the ground would have to be flat. Any feedback on this idea? We need more RTS games!

Could be... this engine seems best suited to car games, though (like Stunts or 4DSD)

Some of us at calcgames.org are working on a port of StarCraft. All we need is an update from our main programmer to know how the project is going because we have a vast majority of the terran gfx converted.

Sorry but that is highly unlikely. BTW, this is another reason why the 68k series calc are the best!

if someone could make a 3D engin fast enough to make a Mist type game that would ROCK. But I dout that will happen.

If you mean MYST (with a Y), then I believe that game had all of its graphics pre-rendered, so it only displays a static image based on where you are in the "world". If it doesn't, then I'm seriously mistaken, and I'll go back in my hole now...

If you don't mean MYST, then what is Mist? (besides a spray of water) Is that a brand of soda? :-)

I like Sierra Mist! But that's besides the point...

I've never heard of "Mist" before. Is it a FPS game?

I've heard of Myst - Made by Broderbund(?)
I think it's a kind of point-and-click game, like Day of the Tentacle or Sam & Max, but in 3D and with a sort of RPG behind it...

yeah theres a bunch of prefab images for the most part (there are some animations when u click certain things) - pretty good computer generated graphix. actually, its sequel, riven, is even better and more in depth. i haven't played part 3 (Exile) but i imagine that it blows both of em away...

Myst is sort of its own genre. Its first person, but not a shooter or rpg. you go around trying to solve a mystery about these books that transport u into defferent worlds..its pretty cool (and at some points scary ;-) )

its MYST, btw (with a Y, not I), and yes by Broderbund.

I don't think it's really sweet... but it tastes good. I like 7up and Sprite, so I don't see why I wouldn't like Sierra Mist...

Not Myst! MYTH!!!
Ti-89_Coder Account Info

Ach! It allways annoys me when people confuse MYTH with MYST. Myth (1&2) is a great Real-Time-Strategy Game in 3D made by Bungie in 1998. (In case anyone does not know of them, they made the old Marathon games and (after being _eaten_ by M$) Halo for the XBOX. Myst is a rather boring adventure game. Myth is bloody, violent, M-rated RTS with a great physics engine, 3d terrain, and pre-rendered sprites for units. If you have never played it, you can probably find a demo online. Look for Myth2 (I've heard M3 was pretty bad, as Bungie did not make it)
