Archivers Discuss Peeps
Posted by Joey on 23 April 2003, 08:32 GMT

ticalc.org was down from about 4:45 to 6:20 GMT today. Unable to add files for more than 1.5 hours, Morgan and I consoled each other, discussed marshmallow Peeps, and waited for the site to come back up. Somehow, life moves on.

Update (Joey): Despite the red border, everything mentioned in this article actually happened. The only reason it is red is because it is "funny".

I wonder, how do the other staff members feel about this... "odd/random" piece of news.

It's not random, in that it's news any time the site goes down. However, Morgan and I agreed that adding humorous (yet true) overtones was a lot better than "the site went down. So yeah..."

Y'know.. this news report is very timely, considering it's the 50th anniversary of marshmallow peeps. That is NOT to be confused with "peeps are 50 years old", but I know y'all would have plenty to say about that too.

Now, as long as everyone is celebrating that wonderful little event, be responsible. Never drink a carbonated beverage when you have a mouthful of peeps.

I was afraid someone would ask. *LOL*

Umm... Actually, if you REALLY must know, you're welcome to try, but if you do, you gotta pack the peeps in first. And be prepared to let them go, preferrably near a sink or large bowl or something.

i'm thinking something along the lines of air pressure from CO2 in carbonated beverage causes rapid expansion of p33p5.

Well, I don't know, but I think I might try it :) Do you mean that you'd spit it out because your mouth would be full, or would they expand? That would be fun to try :) Does it work for regular marshmellows too?

What happens? BOOM.
Tavis Segura  Account Info

Eh.. Here ya go.

Once the soda comes in contact with the peeps, teh soda immediately goes "flat".. reacting with the marshmallows and sugar to form a rapidly expanding cola foam.. It's kind of like shaking the soda before opening it, only more volatile. The pressure will be too great to simply eat the peeps.

If you are foolish enough to do that, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REDUCE THE PRESSURE GRADUALLY. If containment fails, it will explode, soaking the hapless victim that steps in your way as you run to the nearest water fountain/sink/whatever.

On the bright side, my- erm.. YOUR sinuses will be much clearer for the rest of the week.

Actually the sugar coat on the peeps acts as a catalyst. because there is so much surface area on the peeps with the sugar, the CO2 can come out of solution at a very accelerated pace. The rest you already mentioned.

Peep Bombs? Sounds evil.

BTW: It would be rather interesting to find out whether peeps can blow up a cola bottle. You'd have to wrap up the peep in something so you can delay the chemical reaction long enough to cap the bottle tightly and run away.

Try it? Let me think. NO.

I'd really hate to waste a peep and a good bottle of Coca Cola.. It was bad enough I wasted 3 peeps and a sipful last year. *lol*

A Coke fan! Thank you! I don't know why so many people like Pepsi since Coke is original and of course, the best.
