Voyage 400 Leaked
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2003, 05:57 GMT

Update: Please note that this was a joke. Please do not contact Texas Instruments or any of their resellers asking about this product - it does not exist.

TI is developing a new calculator, the Voyage 400. Leaked specifications and photos from TI have been floating around since Saturday. It appears to follow the tacky case colors of the existing calculators, but what really matters is that it has a 256-color LCD! It also features a 66 MHz ARM processor (presumably with 68k emulation?), 16 MB of flash, and an IR port with a "teacher select" to disable for testing. The scheduled release date is in August. Unfortunately I don't think there is sound, but this definitely is a nerd's dream.

Update (Henrik): New information received from an anonymous source indicates that there is no sound output, but there is a link port that could possibly emulate sound output, like we have seen on other calcs. Further, there is an emulation layer so that Flash applications compiled for the Voyage 200 will be able to run unmodified. We will disclose further information as we get it.

Update (Michael): ph33r my 31337 9R@pHIC5 5kilL5!

Update: Again, please don't contact Texas Instruments regarding this non-existing calculator.

Well... 35 minutes until it's no longer April Fools Day... GMT, that is... I guess we'll see then... unless these ticalc people are some twisted cats (A Magnus thong? Why aren't you really making them? I'd bet some people would really buy them if only for the novelty of it...) Anywho... yeah.

I used Paint Shop Pro...Photoshop is way too expensive.

It actually looked better when it was 640x480 but then the image would have taken up too much space.

I have no 31337 graphics skills sadly enough...I received a B in middle school art.

Yeah, PSP is the best. And the art job was pretty good. However, I think if anyone else had posted a comment like "ph33r my 31337 9R@pHIC5 5kilL5!" or even "w00t! I r0x0rz!" their post would have been deleted by you within the hour. Shame on the double standard.
P.S. You should have said "Second Update!", too!

i use Paint Shop Pro as well, and probaby would have used it over photoshop (er, of COURSE I paid for both of them!!!;). You should have done a blur average to make it a little more convincing.

I worked with a 2048x1536 Voyage 200 photo, and then when I was ready for the final image I shrunk it down and then applied a noise filter so as to simulate a cheap webcam effect. I also applied a mosaic effect to the screen so it would look like individual pixels, but I don't think it showed anyway.
