Joey and Morgan join ticalc.org
Posted by Magnus on 1 March 2003, 19:25 GMT

The long hunt is over, and we have finally hired ourselves a couple of file archivers. New to our staff are Joey Gannon and Morgan Davies, who will share the job of file archiving.

They have just been added to our systems, and it will be a while before they have been introduced in all the parts of our systems, so please give them a while to get up to speed. Once there, though, we hope to see the large backlog of files shrink fast.

Update (Nick): Files seem to be trickling in. After seeing Random Numbar Generator's 73 port as the first added file I didn't know whether to laugh or cry; nonetheless, here we are.

I am currently working on making screenshots for all the files in the archives that do not have them. I miht add that to make this go a lot faster you are encourage to submit an update of your program with the screenchot attached. This would be a great help.

One more note, if the file already has a screen shot you need not to reupload the screenshot while making an update.

Ok, starting off to go against one of our new archivers :-)

Please don't send these updates until *after* the queue has been worked down. Thanks.

How about being able to upload screen shots from our manage author account page. There seems to be column called operation that has nothing in it.

If you would like to add screen shots, you do not need to upload them, just follow this procedure and e-mail them to me at either:

morgan@ticalc.org
Morgazum85@Juno.com

Name the screenshots like this:
<fileid>-1.gif
<fileid>-2.gif

where <fileid> is the ID of the file in our archives, i.e. the last number
in the URL to the fileinfo page. The numbers start from 1 for each new
fileid.

Then mail them to me, preferably all in one mail. Please do not upload files at his moment just to add a screen schot. Do the above!

How does one make *.gif pictures?

Click on the Above link. You must use it with VTI, but it is very simple. It even enables you to create animated images.

Oh yeah, and if you use VTI 2.5 beta 5 (which everybody does), then TISSHOT won't work on most skins unless you right-click and goto "Skins > No Skin" (or something like that). Then you can make animated screenshots and all that good stuff.

You can also use TI-Connect's screen capture program and animate the GIF's using a GIF animation program

True, but that would take a lot more time, and it would also be harder. I prefer using TISSHOT :)

The link I provided above was for VTICapture, not TISSHOT. Both work very well, I like using VtiCapture. Your choice.

Come to think of it, VTIcapture has more options. I just have used TISSHOT so long that I'm accustomed to it, thought VTIcapture is nice, it has all those border options and stuff.

TISShot doesn't exit under XP properly and leaves itself running as a process (*grrr*)

OMG! Seriously? That's kinda scary, actually.... with every second, more and more bytes are accumulated to the gif file... what happens if you run out of memory? I'm glad I have Windows 98 (the stable version, lol)

Well, it doesn't keep screen-shotting... just is there. I never shut my PC down (hibernate) and went to see why it was running so slowly - I had seventeen TISSHOT processes running, and the program wasn't even open.

It only seemed to take animations with a really low framerate (sort of 2 seconds per frame)

If possible make them in .gif format. I do not believe that other file types will be accepted.

Do you mean to take the png file and change the extension to gif? Would that even work? I doubt it... but that's probably not even what you mean.

If I may suggest, please allow PNG's. I know that Netscape 7.02 can display PNG's. I don't know about Internet Explorer, but if Microsoft is smart then they'll use them too. That's most likely why they wouldn't use them!

Uh, I think the newer IE versions can handle them... but not everybody, so I doubt it. Gifs are universal. It's not such a big deal ;) TISSHOT and VTICapture all use gifs.

It's not weather the internet browser will display them, it a matter of them being allowed by the server. It goes throught a sort of check to make sure they are in .gif format. You would have to ask Magnus about changing something like that.

Adding pictures to all the files in the archive would be nice, but I would be more concerned in clearing out the queue.

How many of them did you upload? It was >100, wasn't it? They all (correction:most of them) had animated screenshots too :) Must have taken a while to write all of them.

Heah that would be me, and I am glad to know that I have stopped making them. Some people wanted them for the 73 and I said no. I regret to imform you that there are still a few in the current pending queue. Sorry.

LOL, but it got you on the busiest author list AND lots of downloads... you can't argue with that! ;-) (Well, YOU can't j/k)
Don't worry, when I get into physics in two years, I'll remember them and I'll download all of 'em. :)

Does that make you feel more important? LOL

But seriously, with all of the different programs you made, there's a very high chance that most physics people will find a use for them. It's easier than making your own program (though programming is fun) :)
