VTI v3.0 Alpha
Posted by Michael on 24 February 2003, 00:49 GMT

Rusty Wagner and Corey Taylor have been working on a new version of Virtual TI, our most-downloaded file of all time. Available from SourceForge, v3.0 emulates the 73, 83+, and 83+ SE. It even allows for writing to flash, a major issue with 2.5. While there is still much work to be done, this is a significant development and hopefully will lead to a wonderful finished product.

Download the alpha here.

Just in case you guys where having problems getting the new VTI to work, you might try placing the files in the same folder as wherever you have the old version of VTI stored. It probably just needs the ROM image, but whatever.

I had to figure that out myself, so I though I'd let you guys know just in case you were having the same problem :)

On another note, the new VTI doesn't seem to support saving the state of the emulator. This really sucks cause every time you restart it the entire memory is cleared.

yes, since this has been 'released' with magnitude now, please consider the fact that it's an alpha release of flash ability, not a 2.5 replacement.

I know one too... it has about 40 roms, i'd guess... but since I have a 56K modem, downloading stuff is a pain in the arse, so I don't do it that often.

perhaps I'll include the ability to add flash software.

the thing is, the base class structure is different, so none of the other calculators fit into the object setup exactly, they all have to be changed some.

I can not help but notice how many people complain about VTI. Almost all the comments I have read are either just complaining or demanding. This is free software people, and I do not know about you, but coding these kinds of things are lengthy and difficult. I think we should see people offering their services or using the source code to go off on their own if they want a certain feature or whatever. Or if you are going to suggest a feature or talk about bugs, I would suggest doing it politely in an e-mail. Now I am sure I will probably get flamed or maybe this is redudant/not intelligent, but I am just trying to make a point. Be grateful, be helpful, stop complaining, etc...

I agree... besides, this is just an Alpha version... it's not finished yet. There's more to come :)

Well, the point is... this is just an alpha version, besides, it's a test to integrate flash for the 73, 83+, and 83+se (did I get the calcs right?). It's not meant to be a replacement for VTI 2.5 beta 5.

Version Ignorance...

That is the one thing about versions I do not get. What is the difference between a beta and an alpha? Is it like a Beta++? Or perhaps ++Beta?

Uh, the way I always see it is when somebody comes out with new software, and it's not fully tested, bugproof, or anything, they call it their alpha (first version... alpha is the first letter of the greek alphabet). Then, their second release, which is supposed to be better, but still not perfect for full release is the beta. I'd think they'd go on to gamma if they want a third release in this way, but I guess not. I could be 100% wrong, but that's the way I always thought of it when I saw "alpha" and "beta" on the end of a program name.

Yes, suggestions are much more polite than demanding/complaining.

However, I think even better than suggestions, would be offering help coding or anything. I am about to write an e-mail seeing if I can do anything to help them seeing as how I do not/can not actually go off on the source and do everything by myself as it would appear Rusty/Whoever might be doing. (No offense to Rusty/Whoever is programming).

yea, sorry, if I had known this was going to get attention outside of the mailing list, i would have waited and cleaned it up some.

but, the code is in a different state then it was as i'm integrating the other stuff so i cannot just release a new version now that news sites have picked it up.

my bad on that. i still have the copyright on it ;) yea that went bad in 2000 or 2001 or something.
