New folders in the archives
Posted by Niklas on 3 August 2002, 17:08 GMT

With the release of the Voyage 200 (or rather some comments on your uploaded files) it is high time for some new folders in our archives. The big one is of course the entire V200 tree - basically a copy of the TI-92 Plus tree - but there are also some smaller ones that have been requested:

Other folders will appear in the near future, such as Media for all calculator models. Comments and suggestions are very welcome.

Update (Niklas): Before you upload V200 files that are simply copies of existing TI-89 or TI-92 Plus ones, please consider requesting a simple link from the existing files by emailing the filearchiver. It will be processed just as fast (faster if pending is full), it will save space on the ticalc.org server, and you will only have to update one file in our archives in the future.

The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content.

Hmmm... I like the media folder, it really reduces clutter. In my opinion, whenever a folder gets above 100-200 files it should be split up into more specific folders.

I am worried about the Voyage 200 (start humming Toy Story theme), will it make the TI-83+/TI-89 obsolete?

V200 will absoulutely not make the 83+/89 obsolete. It does, however, replace the TI-92+. Texas Instruments does not even expect the V200 to sell very well. It was mainly created for 68K enthusiasts like me... I wont be buying one though, I'm perfectly happy with my 89, especially after the new OS is released, icon desktop, clock, mmmm....

I want one so I can test out multiplayer games, VTI just sometimes doesn't cut it. Of course, my games aren't as crappy as, let's say, PICROSS89. You want a "real" game? Download "Mr. Data" or "Radial Pong", those are cool games.

well, i'm happy with my 89 too and don't exactly have extra $180 or so to blow. However clock is a nice thing but not for large mem (I think 89 has enough mem). It'd be nice if TI put a small speaker into V200 sorta like in HP49G.

When the new AMS2.07 comes out, it will utilize the already built-in clock that was put in all HW2 calcs. The new AMS (supposedly) is also supposed to manage memory differently, so people who bought their 89 when it came with 800K of mem should have 2MB available.

Absolutely! TI started putting crystals in them in anticipation of the V200, AMS2.07 will make the calc's compatible and similar as the TI-89 is to the 92+

how come its not possible to use this clock from an ASM program? i thought ASM doesn't depend on AMS this much. anyways, clock would be a very cool thing to have on a calc and would make their usage much broader.

Don't most processors have crystals to determine/limit their speed anyway? If that is so, then all calcs have clocks and it's just a matter of programming them correctly...

even if they do, real clock would be keeping time when the calc is off. the way you suggested, woudn't work if calc is tuned off unless some sort of sleep mode or low power mode can be made up.

well, i installed AMS 2.08 couble hours ago and setup the clock to a correct time and date and so far it works very well and the time is accurite. of course it keeps time even when you turn off the calc or otherwise there won't be a good point of having clock of any kind. so far however, clock is only thing i found worthy after upgrading from 2.05. maybe csc(, etc. would be useful too but i had no trouble converting to those myself.

AMS 2.05 takes up 1.3 MB of memory, I don't know what AMS 2.07 takes up. As I recall, Windows 3.1 took up about that much, but it didn't have built-in graphing tools, a built-in programming utility, etc.

If I remember correctly, windows 3.1 came on 6 1.44 MB floppy disks (which i still have in my basement somewhere), but I am guessing that a lot of the space was taken up by identical files on all 6 disks, and also installation programs, not to mention other programs like solitare, minesweeper, paint, and other included programs...

Well, you're half way right, the VERY FIRST public release of Windows 3.1 took up a maximum of 2.5 MB (compressed down to one floppy). It only stayed out for a month before the next release came out that had (guess what) tons of bug fixes.

I could do that in Javascript pretty easily. And, I made Pong4, a game just like the one you described for the 89, but I was in a hurry. I made it to test how fast the sin() and cos() functions worked and how to use float numbers, so the graphics are p00p!, but the game is kind of fun. And tell cantelope to stop dissing my game. Yeah, at our HS their changing C++ to Java. I'm kinda ticked at that, because Java has to be run by an interpreter (in an applet on a webpage, or in an application that's run by java.exe or whatever). C++ can just be double-clicked on and run as a stand-alone app. I don't know if Java can do this or not, but oh well. I still like the langauge. I kinda wanted to learn C++, though, cause in my opinion, it's more powerful.

Java is a very good OE language. And expands browser's abilities very far. Java is musch easier to learn and to program than C++ yet you can do about as much in java as you would in C++. If you haven't seen any decent or useful Java applets or don't know Java it doesn't make it obsolete. Btw, good notice that Java replaces C++ in APCS classes. That was kinda interesting, though I though APCS class was kinda gay when I took it. I learned more and better on my own and AP exam was ridiculous and wasn't a very good skill test. Well, that's just my opinion. Anyway, GO JAVA!

JSC 1.6 is w00t! (you'll find it under ticalc.org/pub/win/ I think.)

It's a sprite creater in Javascript, and it's Fast, simple, and easy to use. You can import sprite binary for z80 assembly, hex for C, and hex for A68K. It's really cool. You can make quick 8x8 and 16x16 (I really haven't found a good way to do the 32x32 yet) and there are PLENTY of options, such as
Output code in 3 different formats
Flip the Sprite Horizontally/Vertically
Invert the Sprite
Rotate the sprite clockwise / counter clockwise
Shift the sprite left, right, down, and up.
Store/Load sprite to a cookie
List the saved sprites in the cookies
And it's all FUN!
Okay... I think I talk too much... but DOWNLOAD IT ANYWAY!
