Vacation Times
Posted by Henrik on 28 June 2002, 22:00 GMT

It is vacation times for the ticalc.org staff. Being based in the northern hemisphere, we will enjoy summer. I know at least some of us will do some extensive travelling around the globe. Due to this, pending files will grow, help mail will be answered with greater delay, and not much new will happen for a month or two.

The ticalc.org staff wishes all our visitors a good summer (or winter if you are below the equator) and hope you all understand we all need some vacation.

Tell us about your own vacation plans below.

Thank God! A new news article, eventually I think people would have reached 1000 on the last one.

When a news article starts to take more than half a minute to load (with a cable modem), you know it's time to abandon it and find a new one.

TechTV's Internet Connection is fast! I've seen them download a 5 MB application in about 2 minutes! It takes me an hour just to download a 7.5 MB file. And I'm using one of those programs that say that they can increase download speed by 400%! Grrrrr... If I had that TechTV's internet connection, I could easily view that 800 comments, if on one page, in less than a second.

Internet service should be free!

Isn't that only 42 KB/s? That's about 336 Kb/s, which is lame compared to any DSL or cable connection...I'm surprised they don't have a faster one...

Don't fall into those "ACCELERATE YOUR DOWNLOAD BY 1000X FREEEEEEEEE!!!" ads. They aren't magic, and they don't accelerate download speeds much. ^ See the URL ^

It has to be faster than that...I can download at 350 KB/sec. on cable, that's about 15 seconds for 5 MB. If TechTV was using a standard T1, they'd take 26 seconds. Maybe it's bigger than 5 MB?

So do I. But I abandoned the article when it was around 700, maybe upper 600s. I might be crazy, but I'm not crazy enough to scroll through THAT many comments.

I got lazy, I stopped reading posts after it hit 500. Though I bet it would have taken me just as long to read the whole thing. I got tired of reading "parade".

Anyways... PARADE!

I gave up after it got to about 500 posts. Mainly because I was tired of reading "parade" threads.

Firstly, its w00t!, not woot and it's a term from an old video game which has come to mean something close to "woohoo!". A parade is a whole bunch of things in a row, in this case posts. And pyramids are triangular sided structures like those found in Egypt.

Now that you know this you can have hours of fun annoying people who hate the use of "w00t!", "PARADE!", and "PYRAMID!".

I have it set on 20 per page as well, but it only takes me about 30 seconds to load a page (even the pyramid page!). I have a 56K modem, which I usually consider VERY slow. What do you have to connect to the internet?
