Void Productions returns to ticalc.org
Posted by Magnus on 5 June 2002, 12:42 GMT

Due to the recent problems with the server over at calc.org, Void Productions have moved back to ticalc.org for hosting. You can now reach them at http://void.ticalc.org.

The comments below are written by ticalc.org visitors. Their views are not necessarily those of ticalc.org, and ticalc.org takes no responsibility for their content.

i'd like to apologize in advance for the OT post, but i want to place this in a place where someone will actually read it. (copying this from the previous topic which no one will read since it's at the bottom of 300 posts)
======================
i have this urge to try and make a difference in the community... as many of you have noticed, there has been an explosion of, MOSTLY crap programs and games... i'm not saying the people who submit these are evil or anything, it's just that they submit files that are either useless or already in the archives (maybe with a different title or something)... so what am i suggesting? BRING BACK PROGRAM OF THE MONTH (click link for article on suspending it... i don't know why on earth they took it off) i don't think i was part of the community when they had it, but it seems like a great thing... people will try and make quality programs instead of 200 programs to maybe get their program/game nominated... there are a lot of fantastic programs out there that just don't get recognition for their work... it either gets overlooked or people don't have time to tell everyone else about it. is there anything i can do to get potm back? petition maybe? 250 signatures good enough?
=====================
i'd like to hear what the staff thinks about bringing back POTM; there are many more members of the community to vote on it, and it should definately work differently than it used to work.

I agree.
One problem that the POTM had IMHO was not enough publicity itself. If it is reinstated, all people to vote on the front page, insead of burying it behind one or two links.

I fully agree, I'm actually working on a program that could win that prize hehe It will include all possible techniques that can be used on the TI-83(+). Check my website to see what features I'm working on. Please mail me if I missed some.

ticalc has other thigns they should fix first like the comment moderation system plus potm didnt work cuz people with 89 voted 89 and 83 voted 83 so it wasnt fair cuz it had diff calcs together featured programs is enuff

Ticalc.org used to be a great place for discussion but the high volume of comments lately has hindered the ability of users to read them. yes, on the previous topic i stated that it could be at first the finallists would be picked per category, then in each category, people would vote on the quality of the program - there are enough members of the community to cancel out any people voting extreme highs or extreme lows... then whichever one has the highest average quality is THE program of the month, all the other finalists can be A program of the month... or just considered a finalist... since program of the month is kind of singular

Speaking of TI calc sites. I'm starting my own (link above). It doesn't have much content right now but I plan to make it an 82,85,89 and 89 site. So I am officially accepting programs from those people who make such programs. It also covers different topics as well. Its kind of a variety site.

Wow, this post doesn't even look like something on topic anymore. Anyway, have fun.

It doesnt have to be perfect, and I see nowhere on the site where the ultimate goal (to provide a collective archive of calculator progs and news) is not achieved. The menu at the top doesn't work.

Just download Mozilla (link) and a couple of other browsers yourself and make sure your page works in all of them--though if it works in Mozilla and IE it should work in all of them.

It's better than IE. JScript is one example--it's close to the same thing, but unsupported by the w3c because it doesn't render everything correctly. The status bar doesn't always show the whole URL (still a problem w/ Mozilla, but less than w/ IE). That's enough of the negatives about IE.

With Mozilla I can choose to block images from individual servers (ads.doubleclick.net got on there pretty quickly).

With Mozilla I can turn off the ability of websites to open new windows.

With Mozilla I can surf in tabs.

The version of the Google Toolbar for Mozilla, Googlebar, is much better than the original for IE.

With Mozilla I can keep websites from changing the status bar text.

With Mozilla I can keep websites from changing the size of windows.

With Mozilla I can install plugins without even entering a setup program.

With Mozilla I can set the cache size (for both memory and disk) in kB rather than percentages.

I do realize that there are some problems w/ Mozilla, and I will show them as well.

If you have a slower connection (dialup) you may have to wait in one tab w/o being able to do anything while the other tab dl's. But I have a cable modem.

You can't view all of Microsoft's web pages in Mozilla--Mozilla is designed for standards compliance, not for working with some monopolistic company's wishes on what the standards should be.

I can't think of any other cons, but I'm sure that others will post some for me.

it's just that I like IE more because if you make a javascript game, then it the majority of everyone on the internet will be able to run it because IE is the most popular browser (Pretty sure). Anyway, I think you can do some of that stuff with IE, but never tried it before. What is the difference between Jscript and Javascript? Would javascript programs run with Jscript?

     10 June 2002, 17:17 GMT

JScript has a few things Java Script doesn't, and JavaScript has a few things JScript doesn't. Otherwise they're copies of each other. M$ just wants you to put <SCRIPT TYPE="JScript"> instead of <SCRIPT TYPE="JavaScript"> (contrary to the wishes of everyone else).

Also, I know that most (if not all) of those features can't be done in IE. You can block images from a certain server by editing your hosts file, and you can block popups and ads with third-party programs, but not inside of IE itself.

Also, many webmasters not only check that their JavaScript games in IE but also in Mozilla/Netscape and Opera. If it works in those three, then it'll probably work in (the latest version of) any browser.

With IE I can choose to block individual servers

With IE I can surf in tabs.

With IE I can keep websites from changing the status bar text. (turn off java)

With IE I can keep websites from changing the size of windows. (turn off java)

With Mozilla you can install plugins without even entering a setup program. (i dont care)

With IE I can set the cache size in MB rather than percentages.

You can, using the hosts file, but you can't choose only to block images from individual servers.

>With IE I can surf in tabs.
No you can't.

That would be JavaScript (or JScript, as M$ calls it), and I can't find out how to do that. Please show me.

See above.

I do--it keeps me from having to restart to use it.

No you can't.

You must be using a really ghetto version of IE ...
Go to Tools -> Internet Options. A dialog box opens up. Under the section (not tab) labeled Temporary Internet Files, select Settings. It then pops up another dialog box, where you can set the number of MB to use for the cache. Press OK, and then press OK again.

You're right. I hadn't looked at that recently. With IE 4.0, you could only do it in percentages.

M$ are not offically allowed 'Java'- so they use J, a virtual clone (look at 'Visual J++' : why do they not call it 'Visual Java'? They can't. Also, why do you want JavaScript? It is nowt to do with Java, and was originally called 'RealScript' (I think) and was invented by Netscape and, when they saw that Java was to become the NBT (Next Big Thing) they changed the name.
Anyway, you could still use VBScript...

It's the only scripting language compliant with the W3C's ESMAScript.

He hasn't tested his site on browsers other than IE. He should, but o well. I would rant about that, but I respect him for the rant he made about the pyramid that followed your post.

IE users:
In the address bar type about:mozilla
Hit enter and a blue screen appears.
This is a joke about how mozilla (the netscape monster) would crash a Windows system (ie the BSOD, or Blue Screen Of Death).
<sarcasm>Micro$oft are funny aren't they?</sarcasm>

Yeah, I wanted to say to you about the loading time for this page

This page only took me about 5 seconds to load for me, on my 56K modem. Ticalc is usually not a "slow" website, and making pyramids doesn't seem to slow it down at all.

the FULL page, change your default to load the entire thing at once, or see how long it takes to go through all 20 pages or whatever it is... it is physically impossible for a 56K to load this page in 5 seconds. (56x5=280kb... this page is well over 2 MB)
